Sustainable destination Douglas Shire is a local government area in tropical Far North Queensland. This premium destination is located on the coast, north from the city of Cairns. Renowned for its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, there’s no place like it on Earth – where the rainforest meets the reef!
The area encompasses world-class landscape features, including pristine rainforests and beaches, and a diversity of cultural, economic and environmental values. The shire is administered from the town of Mossman and stretches over 2,428 square kilometres. Despite the attempts to incorporate Douglas Shire into the Cairns Region, the local citizens voted for independence.
Douglas Shire’s vision is to become the world’s leading tropical visitor destination, delivering world-class sustainable tourism experiences. The destination’s brand incorporates elements of natural, aspirational, tropical, laid back and untamed experiences. Destination experiences are focused on sustainable interactions with nature, where visitors are encouraged to travel green and step lightly, helping us to conserve our pristine environment for the enjoyment of generations to come.
With the Port Douglas and Daintree destination, this place of spectacular beauty is the first of its kind to achieve the ECO Destination Certification by Ecotourism Australia. The shire has been working hard after the initial signup for the certification program in 2018 and has met 80 of the 100 criteria to reach the ECO Certified Nature Destination level.
